Meet Mike Garrett, Project Coordinator at AKCG – Public Relations Counselors. In his role, Mike supports the firm’s crisis communications and issues management work.

What motivated you to seek a career in communications?

When I began studying at Rowan University, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. It wasn’t until I enrolled in a half-semester Intro to PR course during my sophomore year that I was first introduced to the idea of a career in communications. The concept of strategically influencing attitudes and opinions from behind the scenes immediately interested me. I also love reading and writing, and I’m always trying to expand my vocabulary, so communications feels like a natural fit.

How have your previous roles or educational experiences shaped the work you do at AKCG?

My college education cultivated a love of writing and learning that I carry with me today, and my previous roles gave me experience in both higher education — a vertical AKCG serves — and agency PR. Those opportunities strengthened my communications skills and provided me with relevant industry experience that I draw on when supporting AKCG’s crisis communications practice.

What motivated you to join the AKCG Team?

I had the pleasure of meeting many of the AKCG team members before joining the firm, so I already knew I was stepping into a strong culture at an industry-leading organization. I also knew I’d be in a role where I was professionally supported with the opportunity to learn a lot.

How do you stay updated on the latest trends and industry developments?

I read local and national digital news outlets every day, as well as PR industry publications. I really enjoy listening to “The Headlines” and “The Daily” from The New York Times, and I’m always picking up knowledge tidbits and industry insights from my colleagues.

And just for fun, what’s your favorite weekend activity?

I love sports. If I’m competing, I’m having a great time. You can catch me playing roundnet, pickleball, golf, disc golf, cornhole, ping-pong or just about any other competitive pastime. I also like to check out new bookstores, and I’m a huge moviegoer.
